Northern Soul, Rare Gems
Oh my, how we love that California Soul. All due respect to the artists who never had a chance reaching the major’s shall I say the chartbusters. Although some were chart makers, others were never such takers like a brilliant Soul artist named Nathan Williams, who was discovered in 1974 working as a male nurse in a convalescent home. He was discovered by Lee Silver, a Los Angeles legend producer, song writer and arranger who had a few masterpiece achievements under his belt. Having major songs like the Laurels on Spring with “Baby Talk”, which later topped the charts with Jan & Dean, and also his “Short Shorts” classic by the Royal Teens, not leaving out my favorite Lee’s gem: The Pentagons, “To Be Loved” a Hall of Fame masterpiece! Lee had been finding talent for years, like The Pentagons who also recorded as the Chesterfields on Phillips, a Buck Ram production. The Pentagons lead voice, Joe C. Jones also recorded as the Jones Brothers with his half brother, Otis Munson, a brilliant duo, completing many great achievements together. “I remember the family”, says Lee Silver. “I would use many different groups together, a mix of whoever wanted to try a new project. Groups like The Themes, 21st Century, Soul Patrol, The Jones Brothers and other artists who came in and cut through the years. I was very fortunate to have such a talented source of artists and arrangers like Gene Page and Miles Grayson. I have been so lucky to have such a great family throughout the years”.
